Tapovan Sr.Citizen's Home

Tapovan Senior Citizens Home is situated in serene surroundings at Madampatti a small scenic village about 20 Kms from Coimbatore on the Siruvani Road. The Manager of the home Mr.Mani has been inviting me for a visit for more than one year. So I finally decided to drive down there on Sunday evening. I am presenting below some pics that I took. The environment is fresh & healthy with a lot of greenery & the Western Ghats in the back drop. I met some Senior Citizens living there and they appear happy & cheerful. The home recently bought two German Shepherd pups ( they are both around 4 months now). They are both males - Ninja & Nova. Once they grow up to become full fledged and fine specimens their services will be utilized to protect the one and half acre property.

Your captures of the sunset and of the dogs' training are perfect!

The senior citizen's home displayed in your pictures appears to be a place which offers quality life to its residents. I'm quite impressed by the nice cottages amidst green plants and trees.

I have heard about this place! Seems to be a healthy, good place for the senior citizens. Thank you! We will have a look when we visit Coimbatore next time!

Are we moving into a culture where old age will mean strangers and alien surroundings?

@Anilkurup: These so called Sr.Citizen's Homes should actually be called Retirement Retreats. They provide a lot of comforts & conveniences for the Seniors.
Now a days Sr.Citizens move to such homes for the following reasons:
a) Sons/daughters are busy with their own careers/families that they find parents a "nuisance" and hence fix them up in retirement homes.
b)Parents who are fiercely independent and are financially sound prefer to stay away from their children so that they can lead their own lives.
Either way the elders lead a comfortable secure and well cared for life and enjoy all modern conveniences like TV,Telephone, computer, internet, library. They have centralized kitchen & dining hall as well a room for recreational activities. Cultural programs are organized periodically and there is a prayer hall. Doctors are available on call.
When ever they want they can take a break for a few months to travel # see places or to go and spend time with their children/grand children etc.

It's a nice place, no doubt. Maybe it's my misconception but there's always a certain sadness that comes to mind when I see there elderly care homes.

Definitely "Tapovan" would be a nice place for the Seniors who are otherwise not wanted at home. I really become sad at their plight nothwithstanding the amenities/facilities available to them at such "Homes"

Loved the post...Being young with two ageing parents, I believe that sending our elders to a retirement home is not much different than sending our children to a boarding school....there comes a time when it is essential and GOOD for all concerned. I for one wud love to live here. :-)

This looks like a very nice place to live. Although, I believe that we should live by ourselves independently even when we are old, just as we do when we are young. Cheers!

I am visiting via texwisgirl. You live in an amazing part of the world, and I really enjoyed scrolling down and seeing the photos from south India.

I am also interested in your response to anilkurup. Somehow, I've always thought of the US as being the only place where we have places like this for the elderly. Some of our places are not as good as the one you describe here, but I think, in general, they are improving.

Lovely senior citizens home. Looks very exclusive and expensive. Only the rich will be able to stay here, I presume. Very peaceful atmosphere and I am sure the service will be good also.

I wish the government which collects huge amount of taxes from the the citizens of this country comes forward to build some senior citizens home to provide relief to many poor senior citizens who are totally neglected by society.

A government which is interested in the welfare of the its people would undertake such useful things as building senior citizens home for the poor and running it efficiently rather than selling liquor and lotteries as they do in Kerala to siphon off a large chunk of the income into the politicians bottomless pockets.

I can see a large number of poor senior citizens begging on the roads, they have no money to buy medicines and they have undergo so much suffering in their old age. The government is doing nothing for them although the democratic form of government is for the people people.

Your post is an eye opener to what is happening in this democratic country called India.

Best wishes,
Joseph

thank you for the suggestion about word verification, I took it off. I didn't realize that it became totally incomprehensible... what were they thinking at google?! thanks again :)

usually old age homes are associated with a lot of bad stories only :( but this place looks interesting ... and nice pics

R.Ramakrishnan said...

@Joseph Pulikotil: Yes you are absolutely correct. The kind of homes that I have shown is primarily for people with money. The poor will have no access to such places.Unfortunately the Govt is doing precious little to improve the plight of Sr.Citizens from the poor strata of Society. There are a few social organizations/ NGO's who are doing some good work in this area, but such groups are few & far apart. A lot more work is required both from Govt as well as as from the Corporate Sector who can also contribute as part their Social Goals.
