Break Fast in Thanjavur

We had traditional South Indian vegetarian breakfast at the extremely popular Subbiahs Mess located at a stones throw from Hotel Tamilnadu where we were staying. It was not a very fancy place. We had delicious idlis, dosas, vadas, puris and rava dosa with generous helping of sambar and a variety of colorful chutneys. We ate in traditional South Indian style - on plantain leaves and used our hands. No knives, forks or spoons ! We had a wholesome, delicious and fulfilling breakfast for which we paid a kings ransom of Rs.230/- or US.$.4/- for 7 persons.
Spongy Soft  Idlis - made from rice-lentil batter
Fluffy Puris made from wheat dough
Crisp Vadas made from lentil-black grams
Well roasted Rava Dosas - made from rice-rava batter

  3. Eating from plantain leaves could really take off in a hip new restaurant in Australia I bet! $4 will just about buy you a glass of cola though - forget feeding seven people with it!

  17. Food looks fantastic! Few years ago I couldn't understand how people could like idlis/dosas, but now I totally understand. South Indian would be my first pick. Nice photos :-)

  18. Only Rs.230 for 7 people? Great! The idlis looks really soft! Normally we cannot eat more than 3 idlies in hotels. This looks like home made idlies!

I will note down the name of the hotel to visit when we go there!
