Cannons at Chennai

Recently I was at Chennai and visited the Government Museum at Egmore. I spent close to fours there and took loads of photographs. Here are some initial glimpses of the building & the serene surroundings. There are three majestic cannons standing guard outside the museum theater.
1.Museum Theater where films are screened periodically
2.Entrance to the museum complex3.Tippu Sultans Cannon used in the Battle of Srirangapattinam in 1799. In the 4th Anglo Mysore War the combined forces of the British East India Company and theNizam of Hyderabad defeated Tipu and he was killed on 4 May 1799, defending the fort of Seringapatam( now known as Srirangapattinam). For more details see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tippu_Sultan4.Cannon taken at the fall of Tranquebar in 1845. Tranquebar was founded by the Danish East India Company & sold to the British in 1845. Tranquebar's present name is Tharangampadi. You can get more details here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tharangambadi5.Cannon taken by Draper at Manila in 1762. More details at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manila_%281762%29More pics from the glorious collection at the museum will follow in a series !

  2. It is going to be an interesting series. I had visited this place during my school days. It used to be very dirty. Now, looks very clean and well-kept. Thank You, Ramakrishnan Sir!

  4. I went last year. It is sad that the display of sculptures is pathetic. There is some improvement in some halls where the brass statues are in glass cases and the halls are air conditioned. But there is no description of exhibits. The guard was smoking. For some reason they prevent photography in our museums. It is a shame because the exhibits there are antique pieces and are amazing.

  6. @Radha: Yes I agree that some of the displays are slip shod and there is room for improvement especially the area of stone sculptures. The bronzes display however is beautiful & exhilarating. Overall it is a rich collection of our heritage.

  7. @Radha: No problem with photography now. They charge a hefty Rs.250/- for the camera though. The room where large idols of Hindu,Jain & Buddhist Gods/Monks are displayed was closed for renovation/air conditioning when I visited. Believe they will reopen again after some minister comes and inaugurates the same ! So I will have to visit again to see/photograph these.

  10. Have visited a couple of times long long ago with kids. But mueseum is one place where one should go alone and be prepared to spend time poring at each exhibit in each section without hurrying to complete all in one day.It is then its full treasure would manifest itself.Brought nostalgic memories.Looking forward to your succeeding posts

  17. NAMASTE...
Thank you for stopping by but i see you forgot to pick up your award. It is in the post dated March 8, please come back and pick it up.

Love the architectural structures and designs of the building however I not so sure about the symbolism of war. Makes me wonder why keep the keepsake, what’s the significant behind it.

As usual thanks for the peek into your world.

Stay blessed and do come by and pick up your award. Thanks.
