Kalpathy village is located in Palakkad in Kerala State in South India approximately 500 Kms South West of Chennai & 50 Kms South of Coimbatore. The Village has been declared a Heritage Site and no alterations on building structures are permitted by the State Government. You can reach Coimbatore by flight from Mumbai, Chennai,Kolkata or Cochin.
I found the Temple Chariot quite interesting. Is this a common feature in your villages?
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Kerela :(
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to visit Kerela soon Sir... Beautiful blog post again :)
Chariots are used to carry Hindu Gods & goddesses during processions in festival times. Please log onto following site to view different types of chariots: http://www.cbmphoto.co.uk/Tter.html
ReplyDeleteA beautiful village and wonderful pictures!
ReplyDeleteLike Pondy... In Pondy to in certain places no alterations are allowed in the heritage buildings built during French Rule... It's all in White and Green Combo...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful. It is very nice to see the entire village being declared as heritage site. I had not heard about this village till now. Good to learn something new.
ReplyDeleteLooks very beautiful. I haven't been to kerala and it is my dream to go there and discover all the little treasures.
ReplyDeletewow, thats awesome.. these structures ought to be preserved..
ReplyDeleteThe lst photgraph"close up of village house", is it Balan Vadhyar's house in New kalpathy
ReplyDelete@ Jalavika: Yes that is Balan Vadhar's House. You are from New Kalpathy aren't you?
ReplyDeleteI appreciate for the lovely comment you have written in Hindi. But there is a small mistake in one sentence. You have written as "Aapka lajawab nahi hai.It means I am not good.Correct sentence should be either "Aapka jawab nahin" or "Aap lajawab likhte hain".
ReplyDeleteI love Kerala as I have done MBA there and stayed for 2 years.Lovely village with beautiful pictures.
great to see Kalpathy gramam on the blogosphere..Incidentally, the name, Kalpathy was derived from "Kal" (stone), "paathy" (veranda?) used in the agraharams for the purpose of putting 'kolams'. I believe the local government has now sanctioned funds for 'thittannis' stone-blocks for the same purpose in the Kalpathy and Tarakkad gramams..
ReplyDeleteYour blog brings back very fond memories..keep up the good work!

Although i have never been to Kalpathy i imagin how it would be nearly 50 years ago at a time when all the bramins of kalpathy were living there happyily.now i came to know that almost all young and middle aged peopes of kalpathy have migrated to big cities for a better living leaving their old parents.in some cases old parents also joined with their childrens after selling their houses and belongins.
if so i request all the people who did so to come back to kalpathy and live there peacefully and preserve kalpathy's heritage for the new genarations to come.you are not going to take all the money which secured in your life time when you say good by to the earth.
Although i am living calicut i could not visit to kalpathy.even people from far away wrote their desire to visit kalathy.you m ay wonder how although iam close to kalpathy never visited there.i dont' know.forgive me.
Hailing from New Kalpathy looking at these pictures brings back fond memories of visiting my aththai, who still lives there near Krishnan kovil
ReplyDeleteI have been a student of NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad. I stayed as a day scholar in Kalpathy for four years. Remembering those golden days, I could never forget Mama and Mami(who are no more), who used to be more than a house owner of ours.
ReplyDeleteGood one Sir! A good move to declare the village a heritage site. At least the upcoming generation even after few decades, can have a look at the streets which their forefathers once lived.
ReplyDeletethe word Heritage caught my eye on your side bar. i love old buildings and these are pretty. i like the close up of the village house and that chariot is really something to see...
ReplyDeleteMy father was born and raised in Kalpathy Grammam .Our Kuladevam is Madapalika Amman. My father K.V. Vaidyanathan graduated from Victoria College and subsequently moved to Bombay to support his widowed mother and siblings. In spite of having a hard life ,he has shared many wonderful stories about the Village and his life with his children. We have been to the Village several times . Proud that it is being bestowed as a Heritage Site.
